**Warning! Geek Post ahead**
I just read a slashdot article about a new extention to the X.org X Server on Linux. See here to learn about Novell’s new Xgl extension
I recommend downloading the videos and taking a look. As far as eye-candy goes I think this is probably the biggest development GUI-wise for the Linux desktop in a long while. Some of the features are really cool. Desktop rotation, True Transparency, Zooming, all very cool indeed. While it’s obvious that much of the work has taken from other ideas (such as 3DDesktop), I think if this kind of thing were combined with Sun’s Looking Glass technology we’d have the best looking desktop environment on the market.
While I think that linux desktops like KDE and Gnome dump all over the current Windows XP interface, I do believe the playingfield will be levelled when Windows Vista is released. Tools like these however will more than likely give the GNU/Linux communitiy the edge over Vista, which is important in winning interest from the wider desktop community.
Now all I have to do is wait for it to be placed into Gentoo’s Portage system and I can have a tinker myself.
hey! long time. have been thinking of u a bit lately (met some rampant christians in mall late last sat nite who filled me in on the latest anti-mormon boredom among other things. same old) brought back fond memories. i do think of u otherwise tho just because. so happy for u.. josiah. parenthood is awesome. i’m loving it too. we have gabriel jeremy 3yo in may and laura airlie 1yo on march 4. so happy u got thru the inconceivable part. can imagine how hard that would b. stoked to hear u and melly are still going strong. bruce and i are great tho we still have our challenges. we’re learning to live with each others chosen limits. life on the farm is good but it hurts a bit being away from ocean so much. anyway u may not b interested in all that. i scanned your site back to feb last year so to a relative stranger u offer a lot of your life. are u still at telstsra? if so any happier there? . actually i’ve just come across something a bit interesting that i’m having a bit of a squiz at-the urantia book. have u heard of or read any of it? curious as to what u think if u feel like having a look. i don’t know if i believe any or all of it but so far seems worth pondering. it’s fairly out there. is melly over the really tired sickness thing? anyhow thats enough for one nite. i don’t check my email terribly regularly but it would b great to hear from u if u feel so inclined. happy happy joy joy (ren and stimpy) thought for the day from excellent book i just read called the last explorer by simon nasht
Who has known heights and depths shall not again
Know peace-not as the calm heart knows
And though he tread the humble ways of men
He shall not speak the common tongue again.
Who once has trodden stars seeks peace no more.
