Employment imminent :: April 16th, 2005

That other day I went for an interview for a job with an insurance company as a sales operator. Within hours of being told I had been scheduled for an interview I got a call from my previous employer asking if I’d like to come back and work in my old position in their call center.

It was like God was opening doors for me left, right and center… all I had to do was choose which one was the right door to walk through. I was a bit cautious about attending the interview as the position is generally sales related and I hate the idea of pushing people to buy stuff they don’t need. But in the end insurance is one of the wiser purchases in life that a person could make so it’s not so bad. I prayed to God asking that if I did my best with the interview and if this is where he wanted me to be that he would open the door, however if this job wasn’t in his will for my life that he should make it impossible for me to be successful in my application, showing me that my old job was where he wanted me.

I was also nervous about the fact that if I got the job after attending the interview I would be walking into a new environment, one I was not even sure I’d be comfortable in. On the other hand it would have been the complete opposite walking back into my old job, after all it’s familiar. I guess I was getting ahead of myself.

I told my old manager that I had already been asked to attend an interview and I wanted to see how that went before I agree to start back there permanently. Surprisingly she was ok with this, and I attended the interview the next day. To my further surprise I was told I was one of the better applicants and I would most likely get shortlisted for a second interview.

Sure enough, the next week I got my second interview. I’m glad to say I aced it. I’ve been offered the job, and accepted the position. I subsequently called my old boss back and let her know. During this unlikely series of events she asked me to come back to work there for 2 weeks while I waited for my starting date, the 4th of May. So while I was worried about letting down my old workplace since I had told them I was interested in returning, it’s all worked out superbly in the end.

The job has a lot of perks which will make our financial situation a little easier. Discounted insurance, bank accounts without account keeping fees, and in the future the opportunity to take out a mortgage without having to worry about setup fees and mortgage insurance.

The pay is the same as in my old job, but with the added bonus of being able to earn sales bonuses for working hard and meeting targets. This will enable me to possibly earn up to an extra $8k a year depending on my success. On top of that is the security of permanent full-time employment. Payed sick days! What are they? I’ve been working permanent casual so long I’ve forgotten.

The best thing about how this has all turned out is that God has provided my with employment again right before we ran out of savings. Infact, we should still have a fair bit left over if my calculations are correct. Praise God!
