Beware, Psycokitten!  :: August 28th, 2004

Hi everyone, just a quick update to let you know that Melly’s Psychokitten website is back up and running. Well, it never actually went anywhere, but it did look kinda boring for this past week or so since I’ve been updating the theme.

You’ll notice that she has an all new layout, based somewhat on my own site, but with a very Melly twist. For your convenience the site navigation is consistent with that of this site, so getting around the place should be pretty easy as well.

You can also use your TypeKey profiles there if you like, though unlike here Melly has chosen to make unregistered comments unmoderated, so they will appear straight away, whether you have a TypeKey account or not.

Make sure you make pay her a visit and let her know what you think. Although I coded it up for her, she orchestrated every move I made. So it is a good reflection of what she would do if she were interested in web design. Anyway, site layout and theme aside, she’s a lot more interesting a writer than I am, so take a look! Psychokitten Rulz!

  I’m a hacker… obviously.  :: August 22nd, 2004

I was having a read of Heather’s blog last night when I can across a link to a site called It’s All Dumb. Bascially what they do is take the dumbest, craziest, and coolest things on the net and make a list of them in a blog-like format.

After cruising through this site for a while I came across this link titled, Is Your Son a Computer Hacker?, which originally came from here. By far the funniest linux-based article I have ever seen. It is obviously written to have a go at the Linux community and invoke a couple of flames. Well worth a read if you want a good laugh. If someone had actually written this article out of true conviction then I’d feel quite sorry for them. It reminds my of the old biddies I work with… small-minded Cretins…

  Warning!!! Geek post ahead  :: August 20th, 2004

One of the things I love most about running a Linux based system is that I can compile my own kernel. This seems barely even note-worthy on a Gentoo Linux system, because every single piece of software in Gentoo is compiled from source code and optimised for your specific hardware, not just the kernel. Seeing as though this is not the same across all Linux distributions I am going to focus on kernel compiling, which is an option available to all Linux distros.

For those of you who don’t know what a kernel is, it’s basically the heart of your operating system. It manages the vital parts including memory, files, application programs and peripherals. Basically it’s an interface between your software and your hardware, and is what the rest of your system is built upon.

There are a few remarkable things about this when you compare a Linux system to say a Windows system. With windows you get a operating system who’s kernel has been compiled to suit a wide range of hardware on the market, i.e. hardware that has been in circulation during the last few years. However, because your system has been built to be compatible with as wide a range or hardware as possible, it has lost a lot of the optimisations that would be available if they, for example, focused on only supporting recent processor classes, or even sold varying architecture releases. But no…

  Yabba Dabba Doo!  :: August 19th, 2004

This morning at work I was helping an elderly kiwi lady. She’s been having some trouble using her Telecom NZ calling card, aptly titled a Yabba Card. It was a total trip, the second she mentioned the word yabba it was like a whole new dimension of my memory was unlocked and ready for access.

The first thing it brang to mind was early morning tv as a kid, waking up around 6 in the morning to watch cartoons before going to school. I can remember watching The Flintstones, Astro Boy and The Jetsons amoung others. But I think it was The Flintstones that sparked my memory. The theme song immediately started playing back in my mind and I could almost smell freshly made toast coming from the kitchen. I was reminded of a morning like this when my Dad helped me get ahead in my school work, I was due to begin learning how to add, subtract and multiply fractions during that particular week, so Dad gave me a heads up and showed me a few tips and tricks on how to solve the problems. By the time the material came up in class I had already mastered it and was really impressed with myself when I got 100% on all the tests. All because my Dad took time out before he started work to take me through the material. My Dad’s cool. On that particular morning I did cross multiplication while watching Astro Boy, and then later The Flintstones. I’m also pretty sure I had vegemite on toast for breakfast. I was about 8 at the time.

It’s really quite amazing what you can find in the depths of your mind that you thought you’d lost. Since this morning, I’ve been thinking about cartoons.. the entire day. Why do I suddenly have the urge to drag out my Tranformers and play Autobots versus Decepticons?

  The Grapes of Wrath  :: August 18th, 2004

This evening Mellissa and I enjoyed a lovely evening out at the theatre. We went to a USQ performance of “The Grapes of Wrath”. Now, I’m not usually one for artsy type things, especially musicals. As it turns out though, I don’t mind theatre… actually, I quite like it… strange really, because I expected to hate it. I had such a good time out tonight! That’s the wonderful thing about being a pessimist, you are either proven right or pleasantly surprised.

I totally lost myself in the storyline of the play and was a little blown away by how much time had passed while we where there. The play went for 3 hours, yet the two hours that passed before intermission felt like about 5 minutes. After the theatre Mellissa and I got some subway for dinner. They’ve got this awesome new sub called a “Chicken Pizza Sub”, which is kind of like a cross between a a Pizza Sub and Chicken Fillet Sub. Strangely enough it tastes like a chicken pizza. Weird that…

anyhoo.

  Victory  :: August 18th, 2004

Rember this? Well today I won. Some people said I was wasting my time… perhaps they were right. The whole purpose of the exercise was to teach them that they couldn’t get away with practising dirty business tactics. To me this sort of thing is about the principle, not the money… nor the time taken to obtain a fair outcome.

This upholds my flawless customer complaint record. I’ve now successfully taught Word Bookstore, Just Jeans, and Acer what happens when they try to treat their customers poorly. Hooray for justice.

  Why this is good!  :: August 17th, 2004

eSinner.com’s new layout is good because it was coded entirely by hand. No WYSIWYG editors for me, no sir-ee.

Tip: When navigating eSinner.com, look for the :: (that’s double colons) symbols in the title, it is a link that can be used to jump around the website quickly. For instance:

On the main page hitting :: in any of the titles will bring back to the top of that same page. On the other hand if you are in any of the archives (e.g. category or monthly) hitting that same :: link will bring you back to the main page. On any of the pages the “eSinner.com” in the footer will bring you back to the top of that page.

  eSinner 3.0  :: August 16th, 2004

Hi guys, welcome to my new site. I was getting sick of my old layout so I decided to put my mind to a new design that was more in keeping with my URL. This is it. As you can see the color scheme is totally different, as is the layout. It should be easier to navigate though, which will make getting around the place a bit quicker.

With the new site comes a new installation of MovableType, namely version 3. This MT upgrade brings with it better comment moderation options, most of which I’ve incorporated into my new site. You’ll find that it will be in your best interests to sign-up for a Typekey account. This is a free service that allows you to comment on all Movabletype/Typekey based weblogs by using the one username and login. Why is this good for me? One, it stops comment spam, secondly it helps with comment moderation and also with keeping my comment leaderboard accurate. You will still be able to post comments on my site without a Typekey account, though all unregistered comments will be submitted for approval before they will be displayed on the site. So… to bypass the waiting time for your comments to be seen, sign-up for a Typekey account here. Just click on the link that says “Register now”. I would appreciate it if you would use the same “Nickname” in your Typekey config as that used to comment here previously. If you’re unsure take a look at the Comment Leaderboard and see which name you have used to comment with in the past.

  Scrabble  :: August 12th, 2004

Last night I felt a bit sick of spending time at my PC. So Mellissa and I played scrabble. Usually I’m pretty hesitant at playing her because she’s a bit off a wordsmith when she wants to be, and I usually lose.

Not so last night! I actually won a game…woohoo! The final score was 218 to 199. I had such a good time, not only did I win, but I got the chance to spend some quality time with my wife. Gotta love it, a highly enjoyable night with a beautiful woman, all with a purchase price of $0 (if you don’t count the cost of board game). Who says you can’t have fun while being on a budget =o)

  Optimised and Overhauled.  :: August 9th, 2004

I just finished a stage1 install of Gentoo Linux on Dan’s new Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop. I worked Friday morning from 7:15am, which meant I was up from about 5:30ish. I was up all friday night working on this install with Dan til about 5am, then slept until 12. I repeated this again on Saturday night, and only got about 2 hours sleep before starting work at 6:30am Sunday. It’s now Monday afternoon, and it’s 4pm. I’ve now been awake for 34 hours straight. I’ve only had 9 hours sleep since friday morning, that’s 9 hours in the past 82. Freaky!

I’m a little exhausted, but I’m not really all that sleepy. Strange huh? The good news is, after extensive battling through a miriad of technical glitches we came through the other side triumphant. Dan’s laptop now offically hauls! You should see this thing compile code, I know it sounds hella geeky, but it really is a beast. Gentoo Linux makes it shine! Hooray for wickedly optimised systems, compiled completely from source code….. drool…

  La la Nurofen Plus la la  :: August 3rd, 2004

The other night I was over at Rravens.com reading Rob’s entry on his recent uptaking of a codeine habit. Curious, and somewhat sore in the shoulders from some kind of muscular problem, I thought he may have been on to something. So, yesterday when Mellissa and I were out shopping we ventured to the chemist and bought the strongest stuff they had that didn’t require a prescription. Enter Nurofen Plus.

This stuff has to be God’s gift to muscular pain, and I’m not quite sure why it hasn’t become popular among angst-ridden teens, because today had to be the best day I’ve had at work in quite a while. Anything could have happened short of a second holocaust and I would have sat there merrily smiling away. This might have something to do with the fact that it contains ibuprofen and codeine, the later of which is derived from opium. I wonder whether they actually tested the potency of this stuff before releasing it on the general public? No drug on this planet should have the power to make my job pleasant … even interesting. It’s wrong, plane wrong I tell you!

I only took two of the suckers this morning at 7am before leaving for work, and while I’m not as bowled over now as I was this morning, I’m still having quite a good afternoon. I must say, Nurofen Plus get’s my stamp of approval. This will definitely be another one for my “Josh Recommends…” category. Click, click, click … there, done. Nurofen Plus, Josh’s non-prescription painkiller of choice…. buy it, because I told you so.

**eSinner.com does not endorse substance abuse. Drugs are bad … Mmmkay. Please use only as directed, and if pain persists … use more … ah … I mean, see a Doctor.**

  Obtusity Incarnate  :: August 1st, 2004

Don’t you just love it when someone gets on their high-horse and talks rubbish about a topic that they obviously know precisely nothing about? You do? Well, me too. Nothing on the face of this earth pleases me more than the perpetual propagation of closemindedness and stupidity. You believe me right? Not even half believe me? Nah, I thought not, I never was a good actor. In truth it grates me, it eats at me, I really do not like it when people neither bother to research nor try to empathise with something that they forethrightly speak about with such brazen authority.

Enter Starsplash, a blog that I have been reading regularly for some months since it’s author posted a comment on Dan’s “Antithetics” journal. Initially I liked what he had to say, that was until about 5 minutes ago when I read his Thursday post about depression.

In this day and age there is a proliferation of psychotherapy and antidepressant treatments, and it is very much as situation where doctors seem to drug people up or push them towards counseling for even the slightest of behavioral imbalances. On the other hand though, there are people who do seriously have mental disorders, and who really do need to get help, whether that be through counseling, medication, or a combination of the two.
